“Al Gore’s Penguin Army” Video Misuses Linux Mascot
The controversial oil company-sponsored (i.e. astroturf) YouTube video, Al Gore’s Penguin Army, misuses the famous Linux mascot, Tux. And no credit is given to Tux’s creator, Larry Ewing. Shame, shame, shame!

There’s a point I really wished you had addressed here that is incredibly relevant to open source and to a lot of the hot button intellectual property issues in the open source community. Open source software thrives in the environment provided by the internet. The kind of sharing and open collaboration that has made the GNU tools, Linux and GIMP so useful and reliable are fostered by the ease of communication online. Larry Ewing contributed his famous Tux image. It would have been so easy to give credit in the Al Gore’s Penguin Army video. It would have been the right thing to do and it wouldn’t have stopped the production of the video. Open source is all about putting useful stuff out there for anyone to build on top of. Adhering to the open source licenses is about keeping it free.

I agree (of course). On an emotional note, there’s so many trashy animations, I think it will drown in the swamp without lots of notice. However, I agree to the point that open source folk needs an improved attitude towards legal protection of their rights - after all, it is us who have to constantly validate our adherance to other’s rights as well. It’s a point-of-view issue.
