How to Make a Yankee Pirate Cocktail
I’ve been mixing rum and cranberry juice together for decades, and it’s not exactly an original idea. What shocks me is that no one had come up with a name for this tasty drink. So I did: the Yankee Pirate.
Rum is what pirates drink, right? And cranberry juice is a distinctly Massachusetts (Yankee) thing. So who would drink a mix of rum and cranberry juice? A Yankee Pirate!
The “long voyage” version is a slight modification you make when you plan to be offshore for many weeks or months. To make a Yankee Pirate (long voyage) you add a splash of lime juice — to prevent scurvy, not because it tastes good (although it does).
A basic recipe = 2 oz rum, 4 oz. cranberry juice. You might want to go a little lighter on the rum if you’re using 120 or 151 proof stuff, as I often do. And you might want to go all the way down to 1 oz. rum per 4 oz, of cranberry juice if you’re a delicate lady pirate.
Hairy-chested he-man pirates might go to a 1:1 ratio with 80 proof rum or 1:1.5 rum:cranberry with 120/151 rum.
I have an extremely hairy chest, so just to the left of my keyboard, right now, you’ll find a 1:1.5 mix of 120-proof Cruzan rum and store-brand cranberry juice.
Yum!
