Village Voices & Eclectic Art Emporium is located at 1010 10th Ave. West in the Village of the Arts, Bradenton, Florida. Owner Dona Lee Gould is an author, editor and driftwood sculptor herself, and often invites other local authors (she carries nothing *but* books by Florida writers) over for booksigning sesssions. She also hosts regular writers group meetings.
This Bradenton, Florida, institution has been described as one of the weirdest restaurants in the country. My wife and I love it, and we’ve met more than a few excellent people who live in the surrounding trailer park and RV camp. Lovely spot on the Braden River, too, with just enough alligators to keep tourists and other annoyances down to a tolerable level.
Sadly, Linger Lodge has recently fallen into the hands of some local Greeds who are more famous for despoiling waterfront than for saving it. They claim they’re going to leave the place as it is, maybe even fix it up a bit. But I expect that one day they will yield to their baser instincts and replace the delightful Linger Lodge with ugly high-rise condom(inium)s or blah tract houses. Ah, well.
For those who have never been there, a glimpse of the famous “Microsoft Campus.” Bland buildings, a fair amount of greenery, endless parking lots. All the local TV weatherpeople in the Tampa Bay area are talking about snow, snow, snow. As I write this, my outdoor thermometer shows 67 degrees. Strange, eh? Not when you realize that the snow and freezing weather they’re predicting is happening in places like Chicago and Minnesota, not Bradenton or Sarasota.
